Nanotechnology among 2016-2018 Priority Topics for EFSA's Scientific Committee Risk Assessment Guidance

On 19 May 2016, the Scientific Committee of the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) has adopted an opinion identifying priority topics for the development of risk assessment guidance in the years 2016-2018.

The work programme defines areas where guidance documents need updating and where new guidance will have to be developed. Nanotechnologies are found among these priority topics; the Scientific Committee considers that the 2011 Guidance on the Risk Assessment of the Application of Nanoscience and Nanotechnologies in the Food and Feed Chain needs to be reviewed to take into account 'nanopesticides and nanoformulations, food contact materials, food and feed additives and novel foods'.

A new guidance on the environmental risk assessment of nanoparticles used in the food chain is also likely to be developed.
