OECD Working Party on Bio-, Nano- and Converging Technologies (BCNT)

On 1 January 2015, the Working Party on Biotechnology (WPB) and the Working Party on Nanotechnology (WPN) merged into the Working Party on Biotechnology, Nanotechnology and Converging Technologies (BNCT).

OECD's Working Party on Nanotechnology was established in March 2007 under the Committee on Scientific and Technological Policy (CSTP) . The objective of the WPN was to advise on emerging policy-relevant issues in science, technology, and innovation related to the responsible development of nanotechnology. The work program of the BNCT builds on the WPN and seeks to promote international co-operation that facilitates research, development, and the responsible commercialization and utilisation of nanotechnology in member countries and certain non-member.

The NIA is a representative of BIAC at the OECD BNCT and is involved in several of its work programmes including:

  • statistics and indicators of nanotechnology,
  • examination of the business environment for nanotechnology,
  • fostering international collaboration in nanotechnology research,
  • work on public perceptions towards nanotechnology and the engagement of stakeholder communities in the debate on nanotechnology,
  • as well as a dialogue on policy strategies to spread good policy practices towards the responsible development of nanotechnology.

The work of the BNCT will complement activities underway in other OECD committees as well as in other organizations. Within the OECD, the Chemicals Committee established a Working Party on Manufactured Nanomaterials in 2006 which is looking at international cooperation in health and environmental safety related aspects of manufactured nanomaterials.
